WHAT IS A DENTAL BRIDGE?

A fixed way to close the gap left by a missing tooth

A dental bridge is a custom-made restoration that fills the gap left by a missing tooth. It isn’t removable for cleaning — it’s fixed permanently in place, held by the teeth either side.

Leaving a gap unfilled for too long can let neighbouring teeth drift out of position, so a bridge is usually recommended soon after a tooth is lost.

We offer several bridge designs, and an assessment will confirm which suits your gap.
Typically 2 visits over 2–3 weeks
Results are individual. A clinical assessment will confirm suitability.
WHAT CAN A BRIDGE FIX?

A bridge can solve all of these

A single missing tooth

One gap can throw off your whole bite. A bridge fills the space with a fixed replacement tooth, anchored either side, so chewing feels normal again.

Teeth drifting into a gap

Left unfilled, neighbouring teeth can tilt into the space, changing your bite. A bridge holds everything in position.

Difficulty chewing on one side

A missing tooth often means favouring one side of your mouth. A bridge restores a stable surface for even chewing.

Not wanting a removable denture

If you'd rather not take a denture in and out, a bridge offers a fixed alternative, cleaned like your natural teeth.

A changed bite or facial shape

Missing back teeth can alter how your jaw meets and how your face looks over time. A bridge helps maintain your natural bite and profile.

Not enough tooth left for an implant yet

If an implant isn't the right fit for you — clinically or by preference — a tooth-supported bridge is often a reliable alternative.

WHAT TO EXPECT

From assessment to a closed gap — here's how it works

Assessment & Planning

We assess the gap, your bite and the health of the neighbouring teeth, then recommend the bridge design that suits your case.

Preparing The Supporting Teeth

The teeth either side of the gap are gently reshaped under local anaesthetic to hold the bridge, and a temporary bridge protects them meanwhile.

Custom Lab Fabrication

Your bridge is crafted in a dental laboratory to match your bite, shade and the shape of the gap — usually over two to three weeks.

Fitting & Final Check

We remove the temporary bridge, check the fit, shade and bite of your new bridge, then cement it in place.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything you want to know about bridges

With good care, most bridges last several years, though this varies depending on your oral hygiene and regular check-ups. Your dentist will give you a clearer expected lifespan at your consultation.

The teeth either side of the gap need to be reshaped to support the bridge, which is a permanent change to those teeth. We'll explain this fully before treatment so you can decide with all the facts.

Yes, where clinically necessary, bridges are available on the NHS. We'll confirm your eligibility and talk through NHS and private options at your consultation.

It's possible, since a bridge creates a small gap beneath the false tooth. A daily routine using floss threaders or interdental brushes designed for bridges keeps this well under control.

Contact us as soon as possible if it feels loose or comes away — don't try to refit it yourself. We'll assess it and recommend the right repair or replacement.
