WHAT ARE DENTURES?

A removable way to replace missing teeth

A denture is a custom-made appliance, built from acrylic or metal, carrying a full or partial set of false teeth. Unlike a bridge or implant, it isn’t fixed — it’s designed to be removed and cleaned daily.

A full denture replaces an entire upper or lower set of teeth. A partial denture clips onto remaining natural teeth to fill one or several gaps.

For patients not yet ready for a fixed treatment, dentures offer a straightforward, non-surgical way to replace missing teeth now.
Typically a few weeks, over several visits
Results are individual. A clinical assessment will confirm suitability.
WHAT CAN DENTURES FIX?

Dentures can solve all of these

Missing most or all of your teeth

A full denture replaces an entire arch of missing teeth, restoring your bite, your speech and the natural shape of your whole face.

A few missing teeth in a row

A partial denture clips securely onto your remaining natural teeth, filling the gap without needing them reshaped or altered.

Not wanting surgery

If an implant's surgery and healing time isn't right for you, a denture still replaces missing teeth without any surgical procedure at all.

An old, loose or ill-fitting denture

Dentures wear down and your mouth gradually changes shape. A new, properly fitted denture restores comfort and a secure, confident bite.

Needing a temporary solution

While you wait for a bridge or implant to be made, a temporary partial denture keeps your smile and bite intact in the meantime.

Wanting the simplest option to start with

For patients not yet ready for a fixed treatment, dentures offer a non-surgical way to replace missing teeth now.

WHAT TO EXPECT

From first consultation to your finished new denture — here's how it works

Assessment & Consultation

We carefully assess your remaining teeth, gums and bite, and talk through whether a full or partial denture suits your situation.

Impressions & Bite Record

We take a detailed impression or scan of your mouth and record how your upper and lower teeth meet, to guide the lab-made fit.

Try-In Fitting

An almost-finished denture is tried in your mouth so we can check the fit, shade and bite carefully before the final version is made.

Final Fitting & Adjustment

Once your finished denture returns from the laboratory, we fit it, check comfort and bite carefully, and make any final adjustments needed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything you want to know about dentures

No — taking impressions and fitting your denture isn't a painful process. If teeth need to be removed beforehand, that's done under local anaesthetic, and any soreness afterwards is normal and temporary.

Usually a few weeks across several appointments — assessment, impressions, a try-in fitting, and a final fitting once your denture is lab-made. If teeth need removing first, healing time may extend this.
With good care, most dentures last around 5 to 8 years before they need replacing or adjusting. Your mouth changes shape gradually over time, so a denture that fit well initially may need relining later.
Yes, where clinically necessary, dentures are available on the NHS. We'll confirm your eligibility and talk through NHS and private options at your consultation.
Most patients need a short adjustment period. Speaking and eating can feel different for the first few weeks while your mouth and muscles adapt, and this settles for most people with time and practice.
Clean them after every meal with a soft brush and mild soap or a denture-specific cleaner — ordinary toothpaste can be too abrasive. Keep them in water or a denture box overnight so they don't dry out and become brittle.
A denture is removable and taken out for cleaning. A bridge is fixed in place, anchored to the natural teeth either side of the gap. An implant is also fixed, replacing the tooth root itself via minor surgery, without relying on neighbouring teeth.
